Me name is Yuan. In Chinese, it is the character 源. I got the name from my grandfather. He was glad that I was a boy, so he decided to name me himself. He searched through some books and used the dictionary to find the meanings. He finally decided on the name Yuan. I still have no idea why he chose it until now. It means the origin and the source. What blessing did my grandfather give to me?

I didn’t like my name at first because it sounds like a girl’s name. A girl in my class in the elementary school was also named Yuan, which was another character but had the same sound. To separate us, she became big Yuan and I became small Yuan based on our birth dates, which made me do not like my name further. When I was growing up, I slowly thought my name was acceptable because it was not a common name like some of my classmates. I felt happy when I knew that I was seriously named by my grandfather.

After I came to the United States, since I dislike to change, I did not give myself an English name like most people did. I decided to use the spelling of my Chinese name. Although Yuan means the Chinese money in English, it is easy and special enough to separate me and others, and I am glad to have a name like that.
